Employment Tips

How do you start applying for jobs?

  • The newspaper is usually the first place that we think of to apply for jobs
  • When checking out the newspaper-don’t just look at the job ads-also take a
look at the articles-what businesses are new and which businesses are expanding
  • When applying for jobs also try to be creative
  • The more time you put into your search, the better your chances of finding a
    job that you enjoy
  • If you are in a place of business where you notice that the employees seem
happy and are enjoying their jobs-check it out. What jobs do they have and
    is the business currently hiring?

When applying for jobs, make sure to read the advertisement carefully

  • Whether it is a help wanted sign in the window or a newspaper ad-get the
information you need to apply for the job
  • If the employer lists a phone number, call for more information-see if you
can get a detailed job description
  • Many job ads have a duties section to describe the job and a list of
    qualifications
  • In your resume and cover letter make sure to list as many qualifications
as you have to meet the requirements
  • How you apply for a job reflects if you can follow instructions-if an employer
says no phone calls please-make sure not to call
  • The more effort you put into applying for a job-the better the results
    you will have

Applying Do’s

  • Dress for success-running in to drop off a resume in sweats won’t get you
    the job
  • When applying for a job make sure that 1-2 weeks after applying for a job,
follow-up-give the employer a call and see if they need any additional
information and it is a great chance to see if there are any employment
    opportunities
  • Make time in your life to look and apply for jobs-don’t leave things until last
    minute
  • Look at jobs that you know nothing about-do some research and find out
if you would be interested and what skills are needed to do the job
  • Go to the source-when you are wanting to find out more information about
a job-go and ask the employer
  • When there is a business advertising or it is a place that you would like
    to apply
  • Go in and meet the manager-ask about any available positions

First Impression

  • Whether going to a business to apply for the first time or going in for an
    interview-be dressed for success
  • If you drop off a resume on a Tuesday and go in to buy something on a
Wednesday and you are wearing sweats-remember that you are still making
    an impression
  • Be friendly to the first person you meet be it the secretary or cashier as well
as the manager, you are making a first impression. Did you realize that the
front end staff may be asked to share their first impressions of you with the
    hiring committee-every first impression counts!
  • In our day to day life we are creating a first impression-how do you know that
the guy you cut off in the parking lot, won’t be in your interview the next day
  • Employers don’t just look at how you are in an interview, they want to know
about your contribution to the community
  • Volunteer, get involved, get used to meeting people for the first time and
creating a great first impression to help you find the job you want
